18th Century Cooking

The Backcountry Housewife is by Kay Moses and Kathryn Hoffman. An excellent study of 18th century food as prepared by the common people. Contains hundreds of recipes. Well researched with hints tips and methods for a wide variety of food preservation and preparation.

The Backcountry Housewife can be found Jas Townsend & Sons.

Gingerbread cookies and other goodies from the Raleigh Tavern Bake Shop bring back delicious memories for generations of Williamsburg visitors. In this cookbook, original recipes from rare 18th-century cookbooks are presented side-by-side with their modern adaptations. Thirteen recipes include Queen's Cake, Plum Tarts, Pear Pie and, of course, those cookies!

The recipes that I have made the most are the Queen's Cake and the Sugar Cookies.

Raleigh Tavern Bake Shop can be found at Williamsburg Marketplace.
