Southern Banded Powder Horn and Measure by Mark Ewing

This is a right side carry powder horn made from a cow's horn with natural colors from amber to white.  The secondary curve is so slight it could be carried comfortably on either side.  This horn measures 14" from the tip across the bottom curve to the end of the base plug.  It is about 3 1/8" diameter where the base plug enters the body.  The turned American walnut base plug projects 1 1/2" from the body and has a knob for strap attachment. The turned horn neck is 2 1/2" long.  The stopper is turned walnut.  There
are three horn bands on the body plus another where the base plug enters the body.  The neck is attached to the body by squared iron pins.  The four bands are attached by squared maple pins.  The measure holds 70 grains of FFg black powder.  It is turned from cow horn to compliment the turnings on the neck.  It is 2 7/8" long and the opening is 5/8" in diameter.  The color on both the horn and measure was achieved by rubbing out several applications of leather dye.

This is the second banded powder horn and measure set I have obtained from Mark Ewing.  I will proudly carry along with a shot pouch of my own manufacture and the George Potter No. 15 iron mounted rifle which is featured on the blog for September 16.
